Matching the Right Visa to an Engineer's Career Stage


There is no single "engineer visa." The right category depends on whether an employer is sponsoring the case, whether the engineer's achievements are already documented publicly, and how much time the strategy has to work with.


H-1B remains the most common starting point for an engineer with a U.S. job offer and a bachelor's degree or higher in a specialty occupation, but it is capped and lottery-based, which means timing a filing around the annual registration window matters as much as the underlying qualifications.


EB-2 or EB-3 through PERM labor certification is the traditional employer-sponsored green card route, requiring the employer to test the U.S. labor market before petitioning, a process that typically takes over a year before the case even reaches USCIS.

Does an engineer need a job offer to qualify for an EB-2 NIW?
